PEWAUKEE – This November, American Transmission Co. in Pewaukee recently received LEED Gold certification for its commitment to home-grown building materials and recycling from construction through occupancy at its 124,000-square-foot headquarters, which was designed and built to use one-third of energy and almost half the amount of water used in a typical building of its size.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and started as a design program that can be applied to the construction of high-performance “green” buildings. LEED Gold certification means the building and surrounding site meet a certain criteria for green design and construction features.
Gold certification features at ATC’s headquarters include home-grown nature of materials and products that went into the construction, a lighting system that uses 20 percent less energy, a system that recovers and utilizes excess heat from computer server rooms to precondition air for other portions of the building, automatic water faucets, low-flow bathroom appliances, waterless fixtures that aid in water-use reduction by 43 percent and more.
