Eagle Scout Project Links Local Non Profit, Landlord

November 24, 2014
WAUKESHA, WI –  Logan Engelking, a recent Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America and senior at Kettle Moraine High School, worked with Safe Babies Healthy Families and the Smart Realty Company to achieve his final badge. When Safe Babies Healthy Families was working on relocating their Earn As You Learn store, Logan, son of Board Director Brett Engelking, decided to jump in and take the reins of the project.

As boy scouts earn badge and rank, they must work on a project that benefits the community at-large. Logan provided leadership on the initiative and necessary manpower of creating a new store space. The project took Logan 4 months to plan and implement, which included fundraising, approval through the boy scouts council and 119.5 total man hours to install various storage and wire racking.

“I really liked the organization and felt like what I could provide was serving a purpose,” said Logan about the project. “It was a test of everything I’ve learned about leadership through summer camps and training. I learned the importance of communication, organization and time management, which I’m glad for.”

The Earn As You Learn store is stocked through generous donations and staffed by volunteers. It is an integral part to the case management program allowing clients to learn about goal setting and financial literacy. Baby Bucks are used as the currency in the store, which clients earn through accomplishing tasks aimed at improving their children’s lives. They are then able to obtaining clothing, diapers, formula and toys.

When Safe Babies initially sought approval from their landlord, Smart Realty Group, Carol Smart was delighted at the opportunity. “The space where the store currently stands, was very special to me,” recalls Carol about first being approached. Carol’s husband, Bob Smart, passed away only three years ago, who had also been an Eagle Scout back in the 1930’s. “He believed in scouting and would go around siting the oath. It was our office space for many years, so I was very attached. But I was inspired to learn what it would become for the community.”
