Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Named to 100 Top Hospitals List

Milwaukee, WI – For the third straight year, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital has been named to the annual 100 Top Hospitals list released by Truven Health Analytics. Froedtert Hospital is one of 15 Major Teaching Hospitals on a list that classifies hospitals as Major Teaching Hospitals, Teaching Hospitals, and Large, Medium and Small Community Hospitals.

Froedtert is the only Wisconsin hospital in the Major Teaching Hospitals category, and one of just five state hospitals to make the overall list.

 The 100 Top Hospitals study, which has been conducted annually since 1993, identifies 100 hospitals that have been objectively proven to provide high value to their communities. Truven Health researchers evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.

Mike Boswood, president and CEO of Truven Health Analytics, noted, "All the key measures of hospital performance – patient mortality rates, complications, length of stay, readmissions and financial performance – are improving measurably among these industry leaders, despite the challenges of healthcare reform and an aging population." 

The Truven Health Analytics study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities, based on a national balanced scorecard. The scorecard measures performance in 11 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; readmission rates for heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia; and Medicare spending.
Based on the results of this year’s study, Truven Health reports that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the 100 Top Hospitals facilities:

• More than 126,500 additional lives could be saved
• Nearly 109,000 additional patients could be complication free
• $1.8 billion in patient costs could be saved
• The average patient could be released from the hospital half a day sooner

If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be greater.
