Local Businesses Band Together to Fight Hunger and Support New Berlin Food Pantry

November 10, 2015
As Thanksgiving and the traditional “season of eating” approaches, a coalition of local businesses in several communities is working to ensure that people simply have enough to eat.

Ten businesses, led by Grounds Maintenance Services and Charlie’s East Coast Hair Designs, are collecting food, gift cards and non-food items for the New Berlin Food Pantry. The joint effort kicks off as the food pantry, which serves 100 to 125 households per month in New Berlin, Brookfield and Elm Grove, heads into a season of typically higher demand.

The goal is to fill a three-ton Grounds Maintenance Services dump truck with canned and boxed food, diapers, laundry soap, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. Donations can be made through Nov. 16.

This year’s collection follows a 2014 inaugural effort, where more than 4,000 pounds of food and other goods were delivered to the New Berlin Food Pantry. It was the largest single donation ever received – a record the participating businesses hope to surpass in 2015.

Bags of donated items can be dropped off at these businesses:
  • ActionCOACH Business Coaching, 13150 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove
  • Charlie’s East Coast Hair Designs, 285 N. Janacek Road, Brookfield
  • Elite Sports Clubs, 600 N. Barker Road, Brookfield
  • First Watch, 17550 W. Bluemound Road, Brookfield
  • Jazzercise, 17800 W. Bluemound Road, Suite Q, Brookfield
  • Lyle Husar Designs, 17395 W. Bluemound Road, Brookfield
  • Movin’ & Lubin’, 2350 S. Commerce Drive, New Berlin
  • Skiin, 21675 Moreland Blvd., Waukesha
  • The Oilerie Brookfield, 17125C W. Bluemound Road, Brookfield

“We don’t really think about hunger in Brookfield, New Berlin and Elm Grove, yet every month the New Berlin Food Pantry helps local people in need,” said Todd Ruedt, owner of Grounds Maintenance Services. “We hope that all our friends, customers and neighbors will join us to fill the shelves of the food pantry. As local businesses, we are proud to join our fellow residents in helping the neediest in our communities.”

Besides non-perishable food items, the businesses also hope to collect goods that are needed in households, but can stretch already-thin budgets: diapers, toilet paper, laundry and cleaning soaps, and personal hygiene items. Gift cards of all types are welcome. Monetary donations can be mailed to the New Berlin Food Pantry, 14750 W. Cleveland Ave.
