Waukesha County Recycling Receives Arow Award For Outstanding Achievement In Education

March 12, 2019
(WAUKESHA, WI) – The Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use has won the 2019 Outstanding Achievement in Education Award for their coordinated regional recycling messaging. Waukesha County and the City of Milwaukee collaborated on strategic educational components for the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which manages all recycled materials for Waukesha County and City of Milwaukee residents. The Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin (AROW) presented the award at the Wisconsin Integrated Resource Management Conference in Stevens Point.

“We are honored to be recognized for our collaborative work in environmental education,” said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. “Teaching Waukesha County and City of Milwaukee residents how to ‘close the loop’ with recycling education helps reduce materials going to the landfill while saving taxpayer dollars.”

Both the City’s and the County’s educational spaces were remodeled to teach visitors about recycling, using products made from recycled materials, and how the joint MRF serves residents. Educational plans also provide continued outreach for 28 municipalities to make recycling information clear and engaging.

“Our residents are very committed to recycling. The education is designed to guide residents to recycle the proper material so that we maximize the value of recycled material when sold for reuse,” said Dale Shaver, Waukesha County Director of Parks and Land Use.

The harmonized approach to additional education resulted in an in-depth list of categorized materials to ensure everyone was utilizing the same information. To create the list, municipal representatives collaborated with The Recycling Partnership, a national non-profit that works to improve recycling, to engage operations staff, material marketing staff, and corporate staff from the processor, Republic Services.
